CulturalExchangeExcursiontoWestNile:Art,Context,andCommunityEngagement
Deepening understanding of vitiligo through cultural exchange and community listening.
As part of its Art & Cultural Advocacy program, Muundo Foundation undertook a cultural exchange excursion to Nebbi and Pakwach Districts in West Nile, Northern Uganda, designed to deepen understanding of how vitiligo is experienced across different cultural contexts.
The excursion positioned movement, presence, and exchange as advocacy tools - recognising that narrative change begins with listening, relationship-building, and sustained engagement at the community level.
Why Cultural Exchange Matters
Vitiligo is often discussed through medical or urban perspectives, yet in many communities it is shaped by cultural belief systems, oral traditions, and social interpretation.

This excursion was developed to:
- Engage with local cultural frameworks
- Understand stigma and myths
- Centre lived experience
- Expand regional representation
Grounded Engagement
The excursion brought together artists, cultural practitioners, and individuals living with vitiligo from different regions, alongside local community members encountered during the journey.

Guided by Denis Bithum, a social worker and long-time vitiligo advocate based in Nebbi, the group engaged with:
- Cultural spaces and heritage sites
- Local leaders and traditional authorities
- Health and community stakeholders
- People living with vitiligo in the region
Culture, Leadership, and Dialogue

A key dimension was engagement with cultural and traditional leaders, including visits to chiefdom spaces. These interactions acknowledged the role of cultural leadership in shaping public perception.
By approaching leaders through dialogue rather than confrontation, the excursion modelled a respectful, culturally grounded approach to advocacy.
Collective Experience
Moments of music, storytelling, and collective reflection allowed participants to process experiences in real time, strengthening bonds across backgrounds.

Moments of connection and discovery
From Field to Practice
The West Nile cultural excursion demonstrates how advocacy can take place through presence, listening, and shared space. By moving beyond centralised narratives, the excursion reinforced Muundo's commitment to inclusive, culturally responsive social change.
